  • The British did not respond favourably to Gandhi's proposal. British political leaders such as Lord Birkenhead and Winston Churchill announced opposition to "the appeasers of Gandhi", in their discussions with European diplomats who sympathised with Indian demands. They were tried in court at Delhi's Red Fort. At his trial, Godse did not deny the charges nor express any remorse.
